Kommetjie - a rustic and unspoiled seaside village on the Atlantic coast of the Cape Peninsula, in Cape Town, South Africa, and is famous for Surfing, Fishing, and Crayfish! Although being conveniently close to Cape Town, the atmosphere of Kommetjie, even in peak season when holiday resorts are bustling, is one of peaceful isolation, and the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, Cape Town International Airport, the Cape Wine lands and historic Stellenbosch are all within 45 minutes drive.
One of Kommetjie's main attractions is the wonderful wide beach with interesting rocky patches called Long Beach, which extends over 8 kilometres to Nordhoek, which is ideally suited for long beach walks.
Kommetjie is a fisherman's paradise for both offshore fishing as well as beach angling and crayfishing. The offshore reefs provide perfect conditions for huge kelp beds where crayfish and perlemoen find shelter and food, and are also good grounds for snorklers and divers.
Built around a natural inlet in the rocks that is basin-shaped, the name of Kommetjie is Afrikaans for "small basin," approximately pronounced 'commey-key'. There is some evidence that this basin was used as a fish trap by prehistoric peoples.
Bird life flourishes here wih cormorants and Atlantic Terns in large numbers.
Kommetjie itself is known for being one of Cape Town’s most beautiful beach and surfing hot spots, with beach break surf for beginners as well as 5 to 8 metre giants at Outer Kom and Sunset Reef for the experts. Surfing is better in the summer, when the south-easter brings the powerful swell shorewards. Attractions in the area include - walking, swimming, surfing, kayaking, angling, horse riding.
Kommetjie boasts the highest lighthouse on the South African coast. The Slangkop Lighthouse is 100 feet high, entirely made from steel and became operational in 1919. The rotating light has a range of 33 nautic miles. Kommetjie has within it, and is close to a wide variety of restaurants, cafe's, and shopping centres.
